Do you work with all breeds?

Yes. While Sophie takes breed traits and health considerations into account, it's the individual dog that drives every training plan. Behavior is shaped by history, environment, and genetics — no two dogs are the same, regardless of breed.

Where do sessions take place?

In-person sessions are conducted in your home throughout Greater Boston (within 45 minutes of Waltham). Virtual sessions are available to clients anywhere. Most behavior programs are virtual or hybrid — day training and puppy programs are in-person.

Do you offer sliding scale?

Yes, though spots are limited. If cost is a barrier, reach out and Sophie will do her best to find something that works.

I currently use a prong collar or other aversive tools — can I still work with you?

Yes. Sophie works with clients wherever they are, without judgment. Fresh Start is an aversive-free practice and Sophie takes a harm reduction approach — meaning we'll work toward transitioning away from aversive tools when it's safe to do so, with a training plan in place to support that process. How you've trained in the past won't disqualify you from working together.

What's the difference between a trainer and a certified dog behavior consultant?

Anyone can call themselves a dog trainer — there's no licensing or regulation in the industry. A Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) through the IAABC requires 500+ hours of documented case experience, 3+ years working with complex behavioral cases, and demonstrated expertise across multiple species and methodologies.

Can I do sessions if I have multiple dogs

Yes, though sessions are typically focused on one dog at a time. If you have multiple dogs with behavioral needs, there may be an added fee for the initial consultation since each dog requires their own behavior plan. Ongoing lesson pricing remains the same. Sophie will discuss the best approach during your intro call.
